Multiple Domain Names
I had a phone call the other day from someone enquiring about my seo service.
They said that they were having a new website built and they were going to have 200 domain names
pointing to the same website address.
I quite often hear this, some people think that if they have lots of domain names pointing to a website
they will be increasing their chances of being found within the search engine results,
They think that by having say 50 domain names pointing to their website means that they have another 50 websites.
This is not the case.
Having additional domain names pointing to the same website does not have any search engine optimisation benefits what so ever.
What can happen if Google actually indexes the extra domain names is that Google will split your website pages between
the domain names. For instance say you have 100 pages and 5 domain names pointing to the same website, what Google could
do is to allocate 50 pages to your main website address and the remaining 50 pages could be split across the other 4 domain
names, 25 to one, 10 to another 5 to another and 10 to the last domain name, etc.
The only way to have any search engine optimisation benefits from multiple domain names is to have additional stand alone
websites, but that's another subject for an article.
